In 2007, Canada's federal parliament officially declared October as Islamic History Month in Canada.
Islamic History Month Canada is an educational and cultural project originated, developed and sponsored by the Canadian Islamic Congress.
The objective of IHMC is to motivate and inspire Canadian Muslims to annually share their history, heritage and culture with fellow Canadians during one month, to be called the Islamic History Month Canada (IHMC).
This goal would be achieved through community and public events such as; exhibitions, lectures, celebrity tours, book fairs, and other complementary activities.
October was chosen as a month in which Canadian Muslims celebrate and share our diverse civilization, including our contributions to the arts, sciences, medicine, architecture, humanities, music, spirituality, and every area of human knowledge. It will become a permanent part of Canada's multicultural calendar with similar events across the country and will build bridges of understanding and appreciation between Muslims and all other Canadians.
As part of IHMC events, Islamic History Month Kingston is pleased to announce the publishing of its website to provide Kingston community with information on public events during the Islamic history month.
Having been part of the initiative launched in 2007 to get the month of October recognized as Islamic History Month Canada, a local committee was established in Kingston to work toward that goal. The Mayor of Kingston was contacted for the purpose of getting the city’s approval for proclaiming October as Islamic History Month Canada. At its meeting on September 4, 2007 the City Council unanimously approved the idea and thus October 2007 was proclaimed as Islamic History Month Canada in Kingston.
In 2007, the program included a talk by Imam Yasin Dwyer on the “History of Islam in the Americas: A Historical Review of the Muslim Communities of the West”. This lecture was delivered on October 18, 2007 on Queen’s Campus.
Another talk was given by Professor Seyyid Hossein Nasr on “The Interconnections of Islamic Art, Science, and Spirituality”. The lecture was held on October 26, 2007 on Queen’s Campus.
The 2007 Program also included Islamic book displays at different libraries. These included the Eng/Sci. library at Queen’s and a number of branches of the Kingston Public Library. There was also a book fair held at the Islamic Center of Kingston.
For the year 2008, once again the Mayor of Kingston did proclaim the Month of October 2008 as Islamic History Month Canada in Kingston.
The program includes three talks by Imam Yasin Dwyer, Professor Ingrid Hehmeyer and Professor Adnan Husein (See Calendar for details). The program will also include the film documentary “The Headmaster and the Headscarf’ as well as a book review on the life of Prophet Muhammad. This book review will be discussed during the month of October, 2008 (see calendar for details).
There will also be Islamic book displays in different libraries in Kingston. An Islamic book fair will be held in the Islamic Center of Kingston. As well, display of a rare copy of the Qur’an will be held at Queen’s archives.
The program promises to be rich and interesting. Please make an effort to attend a good part of that program.
